Students who will be entering high school next fall, along with their parents, are invited to a middle school parent night at Cimarron-Memorial High School on Thurs., March 25. Activities will begin at 6 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.

Under the direction of teacher Sue Fullmer, East CTA's Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members competed at the FCCLA State Conference. Silver and bronze winners were Sarah Ashworth, Jessica Cramer, Emily Olsen, Vai Pine, Leticia Ramirez, Jessica Skinner, and Miranda Sprague. Earning a first place gold award was Adrianna Ortega. Adrianna, Miranda Sprague, Jessica Skinner and Sarah Ashworth earned the right to compete nationally in events related to their program studies in Early Childhood Education. The students will take part in a national competition in Chicago in early July.

A group of women from the John S. Park Elementary School kindergarten class of 1961-1962 have founded a group they call Woven. This group of women were in Doris Hancock's kindergarten class. These individuals went on to become become teachers, nurses and other professionals. Most recently Woven donated a number of items they had collected to benefit the students at John S. Park. Woven is now working on forming a coalition of tutors and volunteers to provide additional support for Park's students.

Clark High School received a $30,000 grant from Citi Foundation dedicated to the Academy of Finance (AOF) students for the AOF College Bound Initiative. The Academy of Finance at Clark HS is the only college prep program of its kind in Nevada’s public school system.

CCSD students are invited to apply for the 2010/2011 Student Advisory Committee to the Board of School Trustees. Any secondary student may apply. The committee allows students to share their opinions with the School Board and other CCSD officials. The deadline for applications is April 30.

The NV Energy Foundation Committee awarded a $25,000 grant to Spread the Word Nevada, a nonprofit children’s literacy organization. The grant will help the local group provide books and literacy services to disadvantaged youth in southern Nevada.

Three CCSD students are among the top youth musicians in Clark County and will perform with the Henderson Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, March 28 at 2 p.m. in the Henderson Pavilion. Darrin Chao and Jae Ahn of GVHS plus Michael Brukhardt of LVA are among the winners of this year’s Young Artists Competition. The March 28 performance is free and open to the public.
